Roche ready to make Tamiflu in US

first_imgSep 20, 2006 (CIDRAP News) – Roche announced last week that its United States supply chain for oseltamivir (Tamiflu), used to treat avian influenza and seasonal flu patients, is fully operational, meaning all aspects of its production are based on US soil. The company said it now has the capability to produce 80 million treatment courses of the drug annually in the United States, which is stockpiling oseltamivir as part of efforts to prepare for a flu pandemic. The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) had asked Roche to establish a system that involves US sources for all phases of osteltamivir production, from synthesizing shikimic acid, the starting material, to packaging the medication, the company said in a news release.”The ability to produce Tamiflu from start to finish on US soil is a significant milestone that will help ensure access to Tamiflu when and where it is needed,” said George Abercrombie, president and chief executive officer for Hoffman-La Roche, Inc., the company’s US pharmaceutical division. The company said HHS has ordered 21.3 million treatment courses of oseltamivir for the Strategic National Stockpile, all of which will be delivered by the end of this year. Marc Wolfson, a spokesman for the HHS Office of Public Health Emergency Preparedness in Washington, DC, verified that information for CIDRAP News. The long-term goal for the stockpile is 81 million courses by the end of 2008, according to Wolfson and Roche. Of that total, HHS says it will buy 50 million courses and will provide a 25% subsidy for states to purchase another 31 million courses.Roche says that with its own manufacturing network and 16 external contractors, it has more than enough capacity to meet the osteltamivir orders from 75 countries that are stockpiling the drug. Global annual production capacity will reach 400 million treatment courses by the end of this year, the company said.Approved for prevention and treatment of influenza in adults and children 1 year and older, osteltamivir is intended to treat influenza viruses in all clinical settings. It has been shown to be active against the H5N1 virus in the laboratory and in animals that are infected with an H5N1 avian flu strain taken from humans, according to Roche.See also:Sep 14 Roche press release read more

436 Indonesian Tablighi Jamaat members on trial in India for visa, quarantine violations

first_imgMore than 400 Indonesian members of Tablighi Jamaat, a worldwide Islamic missionary movement, have been on trial in India over past three days for allegedly violating immigration and quarantine policies in the South Asia country.“On July 14, 150 Indonesians went on trial, followed by 197 people on July 15 and 89 people on July 16,” Foreign Ministry director for citizens protection Judha Nugraha said during a press briefing on Friday.Judha said the 436 Indonesians, who were stranded in India after attending an Islamic gathering, were accused of violating their visas as well as violating the Epidemic Disease Act and, therefore, contributing to the spread of COVID-19. At least 17 states in India have reported COVID-19 cases linked to the religious gathering in Delhi, local media reported.Read also: COVID-19: 361 Indonesian Tablighi Jamaat members return home, others still stranded overseasDuring the court hearing, most of the defendants admitted to the violations but said they never intended to break the law.The judge has yet to hand down a sentence, but according to previous cases in which other Tablighi Jamaat members from other countries were found guilty, the fines ranged from 5,000 rupees (US$ 66.69) to 10,000 rupees.Judha added that the Indonesian government had provided legal assistance to the accused individuals, including by temporarily releasing them on bail.“On July 16, the Indonesian Embassy in New Delhi managed to release 53 Indonesian members of Tablighi Jamaat from prison in Chennai, so they could have better shelter while awaiting trial,” he said.Once the legal proceedings are completed, the Embassy and the Consulate General in Mumbai will facilitate the repatriation process of the Indonesian citizens, Judha added.Topics :last_img read more

West Indies reduced to 26/2 at lunch after India gain 143-run lead

first_imgIndian new ball bowlers went for the kill reducing West Indies to 26 for two at lunch on the penultimate day of the final Test match after their batsmen provided a substancial first innings lead of 143 runs. The West Indies still need another 118 runs to avoid innings defeat. Kirk Edwards (7 batting) and Darren Bravo (9 batting) were at crease.Starting the day at 308 for six, Indian batsmen didn’t last long and were all out for 347 as Fidel Edwards (5/103) ran through the lower order picking three of the last four wickets which also included rival captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (74)’s scalp. Both Dhoni and the other overnight batsmen Harbhajan Singh were done in by the short-pitched stuff from Edwards who got his second successive five-for since comeback from injury. The Indian captain who scored his first half century of the tour yesterday after a lean trot couldn’t capitalise on the fact the home team were a bowler short. After Harbhajan was out trying to play a pull shot an awkward pull shot, Dhoni played a hook shot off Edwards to be holed out at deep square leg boundary. The skipper hit four boundaries in his 133-ball knock.Praveen Kumar (23) hit a few lusty blows to increase the lead before they folded at 347.When West Indies batted, debutant Kieran Powell (4) pushed at an angular delivery from Ishant to be caught at third slip by Raina while Praveen induced Adrian Barath to play away from his body as Virat Kohli lapped it up at fourth slip.advertisementPraveen and Ishant bowled nine out of the 13 overs during the opening session and both were on target.Ishant in particular was fast and incisive during his four-over spell. It was such a time where he had a chance to go flat out and he exactly did that. The manner in which he dismissed Powell was an example about his growing maturity. He first softened Powell with short-pitched stuff and then bowled fuller delivery which was angled across the left-hander.The southpaw who certainly have a few chinks in his armoury just hung his bat and the inevitable happened.Barath on the otherhand paid the price for his profligacy. He has throughout series charged at deliveries outside the off-stump with mixed results. Praveen who bowled one of his customary outswinger saw Barath open his face. For West Indies to save the Test match from now on, Darren Bravo will have to play a key role along with veterans Shivanarine Chanderpaul and Marlon Samuels. For India, Ishant who already has 22 victims will lead the charge but will certainly need a lot of help from Harbhajan Singh who would feel a lot lighter having reached the 400-wicket milestone. The only thing that can go against the Indians is there inability to increase the lead to over 200 when they had the home team at their mercy. With no Ravi Rampaul, it was the perfect opportunity for Dhoni to score his fifth Test hundred and Harbhajan and Praveen should have also got a few more runs. Credit should go to Edwards who has manfully shouldered the burden of being the spearhead after coming out from injury.- With PTI inputslast_img read more

Though Rahul might not have entered the govt but each of the decision has his signature. Manish Tewari and Jyotiraditya Scindia during the swearing-in ceremony of the new ministers. The new Cabinet has several of the members of Team Rahul, including Manish Tewari, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Sachin Pilot who got plum postings.Jyotiraditya Scindia and Sachin Pilot were elevated to ministers of state with independent charge for power and corporate affairs respectively, so was Jitendra Singh who got youth affairs and sports as an independent charge instead of being a junior home minister .Manish Tewari, the articulate party spokesperson, has now been given independent charge of the information and broadcasting ministry as a minister of state. The ministry was earlier held by a Cabinet minister in Ambika Soni.Sachin Pilot has been given the independent charge of the Corporate Affairs Ministry. But the notable youthful MPs who missed the bus this time, though being named by sections of the media to get the call to join the government, were Meenakshi Natarajan from Madhya Pradesh, Manicka Tagore from Tamil Nadu, and Pradip Kumar Majhi from Odisha.Others who did not get a call for elevation to the cabinet included Jitin Prasada, whose portfolio as minister of state was changed from road transport and highways to defence and human resources development.Milind Deora, who is a minister of state for communications and information technology, found his position unchanged.Another minister of state, D.
