Kolkata: The Election Commission has served a show-cause notice to Asansol Mayor Jitendra Tiwari on Wednesday for allegedly promising contracts to the councillors if they provide lead for Moon Moon Sen’s victory from the Asansol Parliamentary constituency.The office of the Chief Electoral Officer has sent a notice to Tiwari seeking an explanation from him. Tiwari allegedly said he would give the councillors the contracts of projects worth Rs 10-50 lakh, if they provide a lead of different margins from their respective jurisdictions. Earlier in the day, a delegation of state BJP leaders met the election officials at the CEO office alleging that Tiwari has violated the Model Code of Conduct by promising contracts. The BJP leaders also lodged a complaint against senior TMC leader Firhad Hakim and Rabindranath Ghosh for their violation of the MCC. It was also learnt that on the basis of the allegations brought by the BJP, the Election Commission officials have sought a report from the District Election Officers of South Kolkata and Cooch Behar on the statements of Hakim and Ghosh. During an election rally in Cooch Behar’s Ghughumari on Tuesday, Ghosh said the Central Forces will not remain in the state after the elections are over and it would be the duty of the state police to maintain law and order in the state. Meanwhile, the EC has been waiting for the explanation from Asansol BJP MP Babul Supriyo, who sang a theme song for his political party without the prior permission of the Commission. Supriyo had also been accused of violating the MCC and was asked for an explanation within 48 hours.
