BG stormwater pond contaminated with oil

first_imgThe city of Battle Ground has taken action to contain an oil contamination of the city-owned stormwater pond. The city learned of the contamination at the pond at Northwest 20th Avenue and Fifth Street at about 5:30 p.m. Monday. Someone made a 911 call reporting the contamination and dispatch relayed the information to the city. The city’s public works department estimates about 5 to 10 gallons of oil has spread across the surface of the pond, which is about 100 feet by 50 feet, city spokeswoman Bonnie Gilberti said. The city is using contamination booms for containment and is developing a plan for removal. The city suspects the oil came from one of 12 catch basins in the area that flow directly into the pond. The pond itself is secured with fencing.City code prohibits the discharge of illicit materials into the storm drain system and states the persons who are found responsible will be issued a citation imposing a fee equal to the cost associated with the clean-up.Anyone who has knowledge of the source of the of the contamination is asked to contact Public Works Director Scott Sawyer at 342-5070.last_img
